Coinbase opened customer accounts to AI agents on October 22, 2026, posting on X that “Coinbase is open for AI agents.” Users can connect an approved AI assistant to trade cryptocurrency, US stocks and ETFs, and derivatives on Coinbase from a single conversation.

Approved tools include ChatGPT, Grok, Grok Bot, Muse, Perplexity Computer, Claude, Claude Code, and Codex CLI. The connection runs through Coinbase’s MCP (model context protocol) server. In ChatGPT, a user adds agents.coinbase.com/mcp as a custom server, logs in to Coinbase, and selects which portfolios the agent can access, according to 24/7 Wall St.

Users choose which portfolios an agent can access, preview orders before execution, and can disconnect the agent at any time. Coinbase recommends using a separate portfolio for agent trading, funded only with money the user can afford to lose, and limiting the agent to that portfolio.

A September 2026 update added US stocks, ETFs, and x402 payments, which allow agents to purchase market data using the user’s USDC balance, according to 24/7 Wall St.

CEO Brian Armstrong said on the July 30, 2026, earnings call that agentic finance is in an early stage and that Coinbase has no specific forecasts to share.

The launch follows reports from US banks about detecting unvetted AI agents in customer accounts, often through shared passwords. Coinbase’s method uses a sanctioned connection with per-portfolio permissions.
